Dawnings

puzzled

By Nicholas Hooper

down dark tunnels
suddenly in the light
this is the puzzling journey

as the mind switches
from simple and empty
to full of contrasting thoughts

memories from a minute ago
collide with long-past yearnings
as the watched presence struggles to stay

stay, I say, stay and learn
listen to that sound that was unnoticed yesterday
and watch the dark that will change to light in a moment

finding gladness intwined with sadness
like the briar and the rose that climbs through a song
that love is not easy but comes so naturally from the unexpected

and the sun is puzzled as it climbs
puzzled to find dark places that it cannot light
as it yearns through the clouds of an autumn day

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
