Dawnings
cold morning
By Nicholas Hooper
it is cold this morning
feeling the chill of mist on my legs
the earth beneath the floorboards
sending up a soft breeze like powdered ice
I thought heat was supposed to rise, not cold
but not today as autumn settles its grip
on a summer that is just a memory
of warm days with ice cream and feet cooling in the river
this chill misty time brings back childhood memories
of an old house where warmth could only be found
in a room with a fire, the journey there
being one arctic exploration of mystic dark corners
rich, these pictures in my mind
and I welcome the cold today for bringing back
such warm memories for my heart
and as winter approaches I feel the hope of autumns past

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
