Dawnings

how frail this body

By Nicholas Hooper

how frail this body
a slim chance between life and eternity
a skin so slight that covers that free-flowing blood
containing a life force from the heart

this mind protected
in a shell that can be cracked by stone
a false move of flesh and thoughts can fall
to a darkness of unknowing

and in this encasement
made of so many delicate elements
rises a soul so strong that it can fly in the face
of all adversity

this part of life
this awareness of who we are
arises from our fragile vessel singing and bringing love
to a world of tooth and nail

so look to the body
care and cherish it as a child
and finding a way to fuel it with beautiful energy
give light through eyes that truly see

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
