Dawnings
looking over our shoulders
By Nicholas Hooper
how many look over their shoulders
fear and violence have brought this, you say
being avenged is always a two edged sword
as man takes revenge on man who took revenge
when will all this stop? you ask
when will the boiling anger calm to a place of seeing?
but there is no answer except now
when we strive to forgive and shake hands
in the history of human occupied world
there has always been war and terror
are we destined to always look over our shoulders
as the defeated becomes the aggressor
becomes the defeated becomes the aggressor?
or can the lion lay down with the lamb
the wolf with the child
as we stop and look forward
and see what is in front of our very eyes?

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
