Dawnings
What a mess
By Nicholas Hooper
What a mess we’re in!
Truly.
It’s so bad, that many of us have started Christmas early
in order to stop that feeling of mess.
We, or some of us, voted in a new government
In the hope that they would get us out of this mess.
But surprise, surprise, they’re in a mess too.
They haven’t been careful enough with their ideas:
too many sledgehammers to crack nuts.
But don’t get me wrong, I wanted them to do better.
After all it couldn’t have got worse.
And then, after all the warnings and hope of a man
who says we can change things for the better,
human nature in the form of wars and increased consumption
shows we can’t.
We’re in a mess where good ideas and intentions don’t seem to work
because we humans keep on pulling them to pieces!

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
