Dawnings
Ocean of emotion
By Nicholas Hooper
Ride the waves of happy, sad
Good and bad, all you’ve had
Deep beneath the surface now
Begin to really notice how
Feelings that you so don’t want
Murmur with an eerie chant
There is no easy way to fix
This maelstrom in the ocean mix
So know it’s there, so hard to bear
And write a song for all to hear
About the anger deep beneath
The waves that hide your anger’s grief
Your fear is that it will not keep
Down in your unsafe ocean’s deep
But surface now a monster great
That will destroy all you create
And take away your joyful peace
And stop you having full release
From hell that should a heaven make
A heart that truly wants to break
A mind that fully needs to speak
Of justice, kindness right to seek
So know the fear and anger, keep
It near the surface, not down deep
Yes, know your ocean of emotion
Let joy be joined with saddest motion
Let peace be joined with anger, rage,
And fear be reassured by age
For time can help your ocean grow
so all your feelings you can know.

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
