Dawnings

Bittersweet

By Nicholas Hooper

Bittersweet the dawn
That wakes the same way
Show me the difference
That makes a new day

Threshold of new life
Closed by the old
Finding no warmth
In this familiar cold

Safe is not safe
But neither is new
Finding a way
That’s found by so few

Taking that leap
But which way to go?
If you do nothing
There’s no way to grow

This way and that way
Look side to side
Sunshine or moonshine
World open wide

But in that brief moment
When dawn breaks the sky
Look for the opening
And don’t ask for why

Bittersweet moment
Oh bittersweet sight
Show me the way through
Till dusk turns to night

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
