Dawnings
Fortune
By Nicholas Hooper
As luck will have it
Not a place of war or famine
Not a house that is flooded by the waters of climate change
Not a home that struggles to pay for food and warmth
No need to leave
No need to flee the guns
No need to find somewhere to stay alive
But here in a place of safety and comfort
What fortune this is
How to share it with another
How to give space for people to live
How to find room on this crowded isle
We have the magic
We have the power
To take in the stranger
To take in the lost child
To take in the old and infirm
To feed the hungry
To save our nature
And find a place in our hearts
For all who suffer.

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
