Dawnings

The dark side of the coin

By Nicholas Hooper

Thank God for Tara, I say when the coin flips and falls and all I can see is the dark side.
The world becomes reversed and all that looked promising changes to sad loneliness.
Fear creeps in on all sides like water flooding my mind and all I can do is pray.
But she in her mediations reminds me that I share this scared heart with many.
So come home now, come home to some health and some friendship, I say to myself.
And find yourself in a world where the coin has flipped the right way up.
And although there is much to fear and worry about, remember the goodness around
and stretch your arms up to greet the sun in praise of this good, good world.

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
