Dawnings
unbidden
By Nicholas Hooper
unbidden
words come spinning out
round and round
they make no sound
‘cept in my head
the moon has moved
leaving light
in inaccessible places
shadows changed and darker
and still the words flow on
perhaps there is another way
(but I haven’t found it yet)
to begin my day
so come on words
spin, spin, spin
making a tiny din
in my head, in my head
but every day they come out
different – ifferent – ifferent
rebounding in my skull
like echoes of mind
at once lost and found
and if I look round
there will be another
and another and another
finding its way
through the leaking, creaking
gaps in my soul
to carry on its own universe
until time is done

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
