Dawnings

elements

By Nicholas Hooper

it was cold this morning
the moon had drifted off to the left
as though trying to escape from the freezing sky
and the call of a warm shed focused our minds on the task ahead

slowing down to a point
where the breath could calm the cold
and warmth came from inside the shoulders
an expansion of time as it slowed and then disappeared

then a bird started to sing
chasing off the cold elements of the dawn
with a cheerful hope that belied the size of such a small performer
and the day started warming up as nature held out its arms to embrace us all

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
