Dawnings
A natural rhythm
By Nicholas Hooper
All given time and space
not to be pushed by others’ opinions
not to be tempted by the unachievable
not to be drawn into needless arguments
a natural rhythm can be found.
The breath of a day can be started
by accepting the cold wet grass
by loving the feeling of stiff old limbs
by waiting cheerfully for the mind to clear
then a natural rhythm can be found.
Look to the grass and look to the sky
a mass of nature’s ideas
a mass of possibilities in sound
a mass of wind, sun and rain
and a natural rhythm can be found.
Nature’s beauty can confound the dismal
and free the mind to create
and free the music to flow
and free the words to grow
so a natural rhythm can be found.

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
