Dawnings
a pause
By Nicholas Hooper
a change is as good as a rest, they say
so how about doing something different today
walk on your hands, play with your feet
make a plain cabbage a marvellous treat
look at the rain and say thank god for that
as it waters the garden and drips on my hat
an untidy kitchen is so great to see
for clearing it up’s entertainment for me
now come to think of it, find joy in a hoover
for sweeping the floor makes you such a good mover
the muddle you’ve got it’s just telling you how
to live in the present, to live in the now
enjoy your pause as never before
with your feet on the ceiling and your head on the floor
and always remember that change can exist
to help you find all the things that you missed

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
