Dawnings

A quandary

By Nicholas Hooper
Here I am, writing a little and playing for a few minutes, and then sending my words and music out into the world using these huge virtual platforms. Such a small thing, my Dawnings, but needing the power of these great Tech companies to be heard by a few of the world’s listeners. My piano uses no power. My computers use a little for recording and saving, but these servers that you listen and read through use a massive amount of the world’s resources and create a huge amount of greenhouse gasses so that I can share my creativity with you, the reader, the listener. Am I freeloading on the Tech giants who care nothing for this beautiful world or am I putting out tiny messages to help save things – to make them better? As you can see: a quandary.

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
