Dawnings

Faces of life and death

By Nicholas Hooper

I walked a path where happiness was riven with sorrow
The joy of today was joined with the sadness of tomorrow
And as the way seemed long and the turning looked wrong
I took a rest neath a tree of green and brown
And met a face that could look both ways
With sad eyes it turned to smile and said
‘Take the turning that leads to death and you will find life
But take the road that leads to life and death will be there to greet you’

So I took the first and turned towards death
And sure enough, life sprang from every root in the ground
Light shone from the blue, blue sky
And small birds sang to praise my way
As in facing death I found myself so much closer to life

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
