Dawnings

for the love of light

By Nicholas Hooper

once, in the darkness he found a light –
the companionship of those in the dark
and felt his way, his hand gripped by another
along the tunnel walls as he crept in company

the light at the end of the tunnel, he thought
but the twists and turns of hard damp walls
made it hard to imagine a stepping out of the dark
and finding that place where the seas flow

the hand he held gripped his surely
and the murmuring of other voices
told of many on this long journey
and then he realised that the light he sought
was here, now, in the love of others

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
