Dawnings

Heart

By Nicholas Hooper

At the centre of life
The heart
When it stops, life stops
But this muscle, this inspiration
Works its time and defines our very limits
As we work and play and suffer and celebrate
It beats its seconds and minutes and hours and days
Until the years add one upon another and life’s time becomes a lifetime

But we feel this heart of ours as a centre of love and of care
As we listen to what our heart says to find out what we really feel
And our heart reaches out to others when they are in pain
As we feed our heart with the energy of our body
And the heart takes the air and brings us life
And beats its solemn rhythm
To the light of the sun, moon and stars.

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
