Dawnings
I wish
By Nicholas Hooper
I wish I had a mind that’s clear and loving all around
And hands so old and caring here that heal you with sound
The muddle of my brain has made a struggle of my life
To find a way on every day to make an ending of this strife
The world has come to clutter up my thinking head with fear
And all that I hold valuable and all that I hold dear
Is threatened with annihilation turned by waste and war
To make us all complicit in this needing more and more
To stop and have a clarity to let this trouble be
The ocean that surrounds me while I sail upon this sea
To find my rudder set my sail and navigate by stars
And leave behind the human lust, the love of driving cars
One moment in my boat I beg, a time of silence true
When mind can be at one with soul and one with body too
To watch as all my thoughts go by like waves I ride at sea
My boat’s direction clarified by words that come to me
And as I sail along the coast to find a place to rest
I find a harbour in your love, my head upon your chest
Please let me stay with you awhile and find my feet once more
To take a walk and see my boat tied safely by your shore

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
