Dawnings
Into a smile
By Nicholas Hooper
Into a smile, I found a place of peace,
of release,
and finding that so bountiful,
I gave my heart to the ground.
The earth whispered to me and kept me company
as I took another step into mystery.
Finding this path, this way of sort of being,
I began to sense another
inside of me, saying
‘all manner of things will be well’
And I kept that in my heart as I rejoiced in my contact
with the world around me.
Flow of body, of blood, of energy,
seemingly ceaseless, made me think and not think
at all and the same time,
and as I smiled into smile after smile
a sunrise occurred around my eyes,
seeing light in darkness where there was no light before.
‘Raise your self,’ my body said.
‘What now?’ my mind replied.
‘When else?’ my body said.
So I did, and found another life inside and outside.

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
