Dawnings
Lodestone
By Nicholas Hooper
Of home
Of where I need to be
Of that place that brings me back
When I’m pulled away, I feel a loss
But my home is there, waiting for me
Those familiar objects, those familiar actions
build the magnet that pulls me back with such great attraction
My lodestone calls and pulls my heart and says, ‘this is your place.’
And in that place, those parts that I am, draw together to make a whole
And with that whole I can make more and more and more
But how sad I am for so many who are pulled away from their home
But are still pulled back to that place destroyed by missiles and fire
To find a part of themselves gone missing
May they find their lodestone

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
