Dawnings

Once upon a toe

By Nicholas Hooper

Once a toe twisted right under its neighbour
The other toes said, ‘that won’t do, you’ll trip up the foot.’
But the toe snuggled down in its place under its neighbour and went to sleep.
Many, many years later that toe is still there, curled up, happily
and the foot works pretty well except for the big toe that has gone arthritic.
But the other toes have learned to live with that
and they all live in harmony and the foot is happy.
The leg is okay up to the knee, which has also gone arthritic, hmmmm…
but by keeping moving and not complaining too much the body serves its purpose
going up hill and down dale and the old feet keep on walking
and the toes keep on talking.
Hooray!!!

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
