Dawnings
outside in
By Nicholas Hooper
outside
the grass
covered in thick, hard frost
twinkles in the moonlight
in here
I watch the cold number thirteen
and shiver ever so slightly
as I listen in while thinking out
nature out there
is cold, lovely, seasonal
and in here, I love that season
that reminds me of life and being here
outside
the world freezes up and slows to silence
in here
we must warm up the space and move freely
blessed nature
teach us to live in your time
respecting your ways, flowing with your darkness
to the light of companionship, food and drink
so that waking with the north star
we can find our way home

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
