Dawnings
Over the best
By Nicholas Hooper
Close to,
a symmetry of words and music, instrument to instrument, voice to voice.
The sound is like no other as it weaves between the two of them, matching, matching.
Rhythms catch me out as the unexpected arises out of the seemingly simple.
Memory blurs with so much to listen to as they make a symphony of meaning and sound.
In the end I am left with the impression of something so good, so unique – like a
charm of goldfinches they landed in our sitting room,
but for now the best is over and I must search for the memories of something so distinct
yet so ephemeral.
Written and improvised the day after a wonderful performance by the Bookshop Band

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano, I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
