Dawnings

Sittin' in me way

By Nicholas Hooper

Oh there I was a sittin’ all a sittin’ in me way
When this old gent comes along, along with me to play
An’ he looks at me with such an eye as if he was to say
‘Are you up for a bit of craic, the craic with me today?’

An’ me fingers go a spinnin’ as he gives me such a wink
He’s playin’ such a speed now, I’ve barely time to think
An’ all me ideas in there now including the kitchen sink
When he stops and ranges with all these changes barely a time to blink

‘Where are you from ol’ man?’ I ask, an’ give him half a smile
‘I’m from the mountains over the seas, the luverley Emerald Isle
I’ve travelled here to sing an’ play, I’ve travelled many a mile
An’ if you’ll have a toon with me I’ll stay an play a while’

Well he was quite a muso man, of singin’ quite a master
He rambled through such tricky songs, avoidin’ all disaster
His fingers twinkled like his eyes as he played ever faster
An’ there I was a sittin’ oh a sittin in my way
Oh there I was a sittin’ oh a sittin in my way

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
