Dawnings

Sunray

By Nicholas Hooper

Sunray, where have you gone, in this long cold winter?
I would rather have a warm, warm day
although I know I shouldn’t wish this way
as our world heats up and we look at the figures in dismay.

Perhaps a glimpse of light would suffice,
sneaking through the grey like a timid vibration
lighting up a leaf or a blade of grass?
But no sunlight can break through the cold, cold clouds.

Held in the grip of this time, it is hard to imagine
that spring, that sunlight, that sitting in the garden.
I think it will come in spite of all we have done,
nature’s message of hope and growth for all to see.

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
