Dawnings

The lone cup

By Nicholas Hooper
This is the first in the Dawnings series featuring an instrument other than the piano! I like to keep my morning routine of writing something every day going even when I'm away so, sometimes, I turn to other (more portable) instruments for my musical improvisations. Here, we have my trusty Ukulele. Enjoy!

The lone cup, the strawberry thief
That gentle feeling of relief
And all around, the sound of
the river, the life giver.

Have a care, on your own
This your time that you own
And all around the sound of
the river, the life giver.

Welcome dawn, steel green light
Not one bird has taken flight
And all around the sound of
the river, the life giver.

Random thought, free from ought
Live a life of phrases caught
And all around the sound of
the river, the life giver.

Lucky man, now you can
Feel the earth, smell the sun
Washed by rain, back again
Stretch your arms, know the charms
Of this land that holds your hand
In depth you go, so you know
What’s in your mind for you to find
Oh such pleasure beyond measure
Landed like the fruit of night
And all around, all around,
All around the sound of
the river, the life giver.

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
