Dawnings
The smile
By Nicholas Hooper
The smile spreads
Lips, cheeks, eyes and brow
All contribute to this exercise
Of telling you that someone is friendly
How the smile can deceive if you don’t look carefully
That smile must come from inside
Not a mask placed on the face
But an irresistible growing
From the warmth inside
To the world outside
And how a real smile
Can affect, reassure and place the groundwork
For the most important of relationships
From the heart surgeon to the patient
From the lover to the loved
And so the smile grows
Ever outwards from
The inner gold
That inhabits
The soul

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
