Dawnings

The weeds crowd up

By Nicholas Hooper

The weeds crowd up and produce giants of dust and seed
Their green dusts up in the hot sun and water starved, they become rigid
But amongst these battalions of stingers and docks
life moves on, sheltered by their determination to resist the heat
‘Green we are and green we stay,’ they say
as they weather the storm of thirty degrees and stand like soldiers
protecting their earth and all that survives down in the darkness they create
Slowworms, frogs, insects and millions of bugs roam there
in a society of eat and be eaten and life goes on in the protected cool

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
