Dawnings
There are so many...
By Nicholas Hooper
There are so many ‘buts’ in my life:
But this, but that, but the other.
I sometimes wonder in times of strife
If they came from my father or my mother.
The worry round the corner
Is that meant to be a warner?
Or is it unexpected joy?
These ‘buts’ do so annoy.
But here I go again: another but
Another but and another,
But I really don’t think that I can
Blame my father or my mother.
Best not to carry them buts at all
But put them in the bin
Cos a but is just a but
Is just a but so pop them in.
And live a life of freedom
From that fear around the bend
You know you can be happy,
Have ease of being in the end!

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
