Dawnings

writing to find

By Nicholas Hooper

in my eyes
green in the wind
off the ground blades reach for the sky
light burdens white flowers in sprinkles of joy
as writing to find what’s on my mind
loads the unexpected and drifting towards a lost sea
our boat rocks and sways in the waves
as the chug-chug of an old ship’s motor
accompanies the calls of gulls seeking a quick, easy meal
but my grass is still there telling me I went off
and pulling me back to a now to be thankful for
even if the oceans elude me for the time being
and a machine starts up to intrude on my tinnitus
making a double sound of drone and whistle
to be alive is it and it is good just now
so enjoy the nettles and lichen
which tell of clean air and food
and the verdant nature
that comes back
now that spring
has started
properly

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
