Description
Detective Inspector Arnold Rackham is close to retirement, with only a few weeks to go before he takes up his new job as an art-fraud investigator for a firm of art insurers. When he finds a wallet on the beach, he is pulled back into the world of policing and terrorism, and life gets increasingly dangerous for him and those close to him.
The Mirror in the Ice Cream Parlour sees the return of several characters from The Occasional Gardener, including Arnold’s girlfriend Peggy, song-writing brother Paul, erstwhile companion and now protagonist Grimwode, and welcomes a number of intriguing new characters from Eastern Europe. Oh, and not to forget the dog.
Reviews from Critics
Alice Nuttall, Daily Info
There were a lot of enjoyable moments in both The Occasional Gardener and The Mirror in the Ice Cream Parlour. Rackham faces high stakes and real peril, the plot twists and turns to an exciting conclusion, and there are some truly touching points, particularly the scenes focusing on Rackham’s dependence on and love for his unnamed dog. Locals will love spotting the Oxfordshire connections, and crime fans may find a new favourite in this artistic detective.

Marina Hughes –
I was waiting with anticipation for the sequel to ‘The Occasional Gardener’ and this book didn’t disappoint. Again I was hooked from the first page and finished it in two days. The storyline is fast paced and takes you to many different places with just enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. I would highly recommend it.
Rebecc M Johnson –
I really enjoyed The Occasional Gardener and was looking forward to the sequel. It didn’t disappoint. This is a pacy read that sees the return of many of the best loved characters from the first book. Arnold Rackham is a rare delight, a sensitive, thoughtful, considerate detective caught up in events that often seem beyond him. His imperfect muddling through is very easy to relate to.
Claire Renshaw –
Amazing second book in the Inspector Rackham series, gripping, couldn’t put it down, step aside ‘In the line of duty’.
Vikki Thomas –
I read this book in a week. It was a brilliant follow on from the first and although I think it helps if you read the previous installment, it also stands alone. The main character is not one of the typical super sleuths you get on TV, he’s more believable as a person. Some lovely plot twists and turns that I didn’t see coming so kept me turning the pages.
Sonja –
A great sequel – definately grows and deepens this world and gathers momentum, draws you further into Inspector Rackhams mind – engrossing well-woven story!
Mr Thornburn –
Fantastic – enjoyed every page!
James Edward Kennett –
The narrative is full consistently of interesting details and this runs side by side with a plot which is no less riveting. A book that keeps your appetite going – page after page. Leaves you wanting a sequel to this sequel.
Kindle Customer –
Quite brilliant. If you’re after a clever detective who solves complex cases with his little grey cells and a slick denouement then you’ll be disappointed. If you’re ok with an almost incompetent detective who staggers through the plot through shear luck and a fair proportion of downright madness then you have to read this.
Reading the first one first though would be a good idea – The Occasional Gardener.
