Dawnings

A kind of magic

By Nicholas Hooper

Inside my chest is the part of another animal
It is like a piece of gold that gives me life
It pulses with a reliability that was drifting away from me
And now I have more energy, more health and more creativity

That animal, be it pig or cow, died but gave me life
And I am sorry if my need brought it to an early end
I thank it for the sacrifice that it never knew it made
And accept this piece of magic in my heart

For it is a kind of magic that the surgeon sews
A new lease of life for one who is still needed
An inexplicable charm that endures inside me
And makes each day a day to celebrate this world we live in

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
