Dawnings

like a flower

By Nicholas Hooper

like a flower
waiting for spring
the work nearly done
through cold frozen ground
the roots deeper finding water
the leaves thrusting up to the sun
the buds at last rising to await the light

it seems long and dark this winter
the rain saturating the ground
and endless clouds, no hope
for sun, for warmth, for growth

and now the tines of war
puncture questions of future
for this world, this planet
not unlimited yet beautiful
in its flowers that come
and grow in our gardens
showing the love of light
