Dawnings

Too many ifs

By Nicholas Hooper

Waking up and looking around
The ifs abound, the ifs abound
Silent and secret, they creep around
They make no sound, they make no sound
But at a turn, in a corner you find
Deep in your mind, deep in your mind
An if that makes you want to run
But it’s no fun, but it’s no fun
As it turns and churns your thoughts around
Making that sound, making that sound
Of guilt, of ought, of must, of need
That makes it feed, that makes it feed
On the joy of your world where you freedom find
For your mind, for your mind
So beware those ifs that can spoil a day
Push them away, push then away
And take your freedom now to claim
In your name, in your name
Your mind, your heart, your soul, your home
Free to roam, free to roam

About Dawnings:
“Every morning at around 5am I get up and go down to my studio. After a short meditation I write down whatever is in my head, giving myself fifteen minutes to do so. Then moving over to the piano (or a more portable instrument like my Ukulele when I'm away), I improvise and record a piece of music inspired by whatever words I just wrote. It is a great way of keeping both my writing and my composing going and I call these small creations Dawnings. They are mostly unedited, like sketches, so that they keep that fresh feeling of an early morning discovery.”
