Dawnings

a brightness

By Nicholas Hooper

the old forgotten bench
and we took it and scrubbed it
sanded it ’til the wood shone through
and then, with a rough kindness,
painted it a grey that made it shine in the sun
a place to sit with friends now
where sadness had been before
an old forgotten bench made new
a brightness in the garden
