Dawnings

amidst the song

By Nicholas Hooper

amidst the song of morning
a lone voice insists
bringing its plaintive sound
to a quiet audience
as others stop to listen

is the natural so kind
that it would give space to one
amongst the throng of singers
and allow a new tune
to appear, forgiven and accepted?

darkness turns to pale light
as silence descends again
the work done, the message given
as the tardy bird wakens
and the rustling of food gathering begins

but oh, for that one song
that sang of love, of hope, of freedom
may it come again and again and again
to herald the day and lead us
to live life fully, fully, fully
