Dawnings

the choice

By Nicholas Hooper

listen to the wind
the calm sound of air moving
or the singing of a breeze
or the howl of the gale round the rooftops

stand under a tree
and look up at its branches
the leaves may rustle and flap
and one or two may fall past your outstretched hand

shall I pick up that leaf?
shall I follow that wind?
the choice comes and is gone
as life moves on and the earth spins round the sun
