Dawnings

the first bird

By Nicholas Hooper

as though talking to itself
the first bird welcomes spring
and serenades the dawn

a short waking of sound
followed by silence
then once again it replies

replies to the silence
the almost unbearable quiet
that must be filled with life

it replies to its call
as though pondering a puzzle
a thoughtful, melodious sound

and in the distance
the others join in
not grumbling, but praising the coming of the light
