Dawnings

the goldfinch

By Nicholas Hooper

it caught me out once
but not again
its twiddly tuneful song
much richer that I expected
matches its vibrant feathers
a performer so determined
to be seen and heard

and now they are here
a group making a tuneful chatter
at the top of my hawthorn tree
and cheering the morning up
after the doleful pigeon moans
the goldfinches sing, ‘carry on, carry on
this is how life’s song goes’
