Dawnings

the spider

By Nicholas Hooper

where did it go?
ah, there it is
standing completely still
on its eight legs
in its vertical world

what a world inside its tiny head
upside down – no problem
weaving from nothing
then jumping so quick
you’ll miss it and it’s gone

strange and secretive
it spooks us with its irregular rhythm
no prep, no ark, no cadence
the magic of an illusionist
its tricks up all of its eight sleeves
