Dawnings

the weight

By Nicholas Hooper

the weight of the world
on his shoulders
I hear them say
left so vulnerable
so unbearably alone

the night brings
no solace
if only, if only
he didn’t have to
take this burden

but who, who
could carry it otherwise?
no one else could see
no one else could hear
the need for this to be done

so the weight would make him stagger
his weakness would make him fall
and finally he would be pinned
to the place where he must carry
the grief and longing of us all
